Focus Group

Research

I created a tally chart of a range of different genres of music to collect results from my target audience (teenagers 13-18). From the results I had collected, I can see that a large quantity of the people I asked listen and prefer the genre R&B. Hip-hop is the second most popular preference then it’s pop. Seeing as I am focusing on Pop as it is the genre for my music magazine and I listen to this genre more than any other and I have more knowledge of the pop industry, it would make more sense for me to base my magazine on this genre. Using excel I created a bar chart for my results to be clearer and easier to understand.

Magazine Covers - Research

Research Rationale

My target audience are teenagers, and as I am currently attending a sixth form I have access to my target group which gives me a range of different ages from 11 – 18 which is beneficial for my research as it enables me to manage more surveys as I have a variety of ages to ask from. Although I do have that large amount of students to use for my research, the ages I’m mainly focusing on to target my music magazine at are 14 – 18 because I’m trying to create a more mature magazine so I believe that this age group will be best suited to use to seek any further information to assist on my research. My reasoning for choosing this target audience is that from previous research I conducted I noticed that the genre of pop music mainly drew in teenagers and this age group had the most interest in this genre.

Research I will be conducting to gain knowledge on my target audience’s interests in the genre I’m focusing on will be a focus group of about 2-3 students that attend my sixth form, I will be giving a range of different magazine covers to my peers, which I will then ask each individual a series of questions about the cover as to which one they prefer and will elaborate on that. As they do so I will be filming/taking pictures, of the feedback they give.

My quantitative research will be me creating a survey and questionnaire. The survey will be created on survey monkey; on this site I will be focusing my questions on what interests my target group to purchase a music magazine. My market research will be on looking at a range of different magazines related to the genre I have chosen and this research will allow me to gain some ideas of how a music magazine is laid out.

Resources I will be using to conduct my research will be web 2.0, a range of different magazine and a camera. I’ll need to use web 2.0 for my questionnaire and survey, and the camera will be used for filming my focus group as my peers analyse the magazines and give me feedback on them.

Intro - Brief

During this project, my brief is to create a music magazine cover, contents page and a double page spread. My blog will be updated regularly and I will be displaying my progression through this course. My blog will include research, studying a music magazine covers etc... For inspiration on choosing what genre I would like to aim my magazine at I looked at a variety of different music magazines and the ones I was most drawn to were Blender, Q and Billboard which are all pop magazines. I was drawn to these magazines as they had a colourful layout, bold fonts and eye catching images.
I enjoy listening to Pop, R&B and Indie Rock however I listen to pop and R&B more and enjoy it much more than Indie music. I enjoy listening to Ariana Grande, Lana Del Rey, 30H!3, Rihanna and Beyonce and many more artists.
Since then I have been looking at a range of different music magazine covers and critiquing each magazines appearance to learn what makes a successful front cover and I will be using this research to my advantage on helping me to know what to include when creating my magazine such as colours, texts, images, layouts etc…
